Fatal Cameron County crash death of Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia – Obituary.

A tragic incident on State Highway 48 has resulted in the death of Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia, who was struck while assisting at the scene of another crash. The accident occurred around 6:45 p.m. on Monday when a white Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 47-year-old Jesse Edward Leatherwood of McAllen, rear-ended Garcia’s patrol vehicle.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has charged Leatherwood with manslaughter in connection with the fatal incident. He is also facing charges for falsifying a drug test. Reports indicate that Leatherwood claimed he was distracted by his phone at the time of the crash, and authorities suspect he may have been intoxicated, although the manslaughter charge does not explicitly include this allegation.

Following the collision, a blood draw warrant was secured, but no updates regarding intoxication were provided in a Thursday release from DPS. Leatherwood is currently being held at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center.
