Fatal Omaha crash death of Amia Bickerstaff – Obituary.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation has announced the tragic passing of an 18-month-old girl, Amia Bickerstaff, who succumbed to her injuries after a devastating crash in downtown Omaha that also claimed the lives of two other children and a man from Council Bluffs. Amia died on Tuesday after being transferred to a burn center within the University of Kansas hospital system, following the incident that occurred early Friday morning.

The crash took place around 1:20 a.m. when 33-year-old Rachel Bickerstaff, operating a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, collided with a blue 2017 Subaru Outback driven by 70-year-old Mike Sales from Council Bluffs. The impact reportedly caused Sales’ vehicle to hit a light pole while Bickerstaff’s Jeep struck a tree. According to an affidavit, Bickerstaff’s vehicle rolled over and ignited, leading to flames that spread to the Subaru.

At the scene, Mike Sales and two other children, identified as Amilia and Amiliana Bickerstaff, tragically lost their lives. Amia was one of three passengers in the Jeep. Meanwhile, Rachel Bickerstaff and a 38-year-old male passenger were transported to the University of Kansas burn center for treatment.

An Omaha police officer’s affidavit indicated that Rachel Bickerstaff was driving at speeds between 105 and 116 mph, with a blood alcohol content measured at 0.216, significantly above the legal limit of .08. Initially, all three victims were taken to the Nebraska Medical Center before being moved to the burn facility. Emergency room staff described Amia’s injuries as “haunting.”

In response to the incident, the Douglas County Attorney’s Office has charged Rachel Bickerstaff with three counts of motor vehicle homicide, with a potential fourth charge pending the results of Amia’s autopsy. Notably, Rachel Bickerstaff had a prior conviction for driving under the influence in April 2020.
