Fatal Omaha hit-and-run death of Walter Tighe – Obituary

Walter Tighe, an 89-year-old man known for his joyful spirit and deep faith, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run while crossing near 34th and Center Street on Tuesday morning, heading to church. His family describes him as someone who dedicated his life to helping others and practicing his religious beliefs.

Kassie Tighe, Walter’s granddaughter, shared that he was a devout member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where he attended mass twice daily for the past 30 years. After suffering a serious car accident that fractured his hip eight years ago, he committed to walking to church instead of risking others’ safety by driving.

“He wanted to ensure he could attend mass even if he couldn’t make it the next day,” Kassie explained. “He always said that if he missed mass, it would mean he had passed away.”

On Tuesday, as he walked his usual route, Walter was struck and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene. Kassie discovered the heartbreaking news through social media, where a report mentioned an elderly man wearing a distinctive fedora—Walter’s signature hat.

The emotional weight of the hit-and-run situation compounded her grief. “It’s bewildering why someone would leave the scene. If you hurt someone, why not check on them?” she questioned.

Father Vitalis, the pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, spoke of Walter’s unwavering commitment to his faith, saying he never missed church, even in bad weather. Walter’s presence brought joy to many, and his daily walks inspired those in the community who would see him.

Although Walter was not in a designated crosswalk at the time of the incident, Omaha police have located the suspected vehicle—a silver Chevy Silverado from 2007 to 2012—and have impounded it. However, the driver remains unidentified.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with relevant information to contact the Omaha Police Department’s traffic unit at 402-444-5626 or reach out to Omaha Crime Stoppers.
