A woman is accused of intentionally hitting and killing 39-year-old Carla Mahan with her SUV in Camden, New Jersey, before fleeing the scene, authorities said.
On September 25, 2024, around 3:20 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting that a woman had been struck by a grey Dodge SUV near South 7th and Tulip streets. Emergency personnel found Carla Mahan lying in a nearby grassy lot. She was transported to Cooper Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just after 4 p.m.
Surveillance footage showed Mahan walking near the intersection before approaching the passenger side of the grey Dodge Durango. Moments later, the driver, identified as 30-year-old Ajee Williams, allegedly drove into Mahan intentionally and fled the scene.
Investigators also discovered footage of Williams picking up two children from school just minutes before the incident, and authorities believe the children were in the vehicle during the crash.
Williams surrendered to Camden County Police on September 28 and is now facing first-degree murder charges. Carla Mahan, described by her family as a vibrant, outgoing mother of three, is remembered fondly by her loved ones.
Her father, Carlos Mahan, expressed his grief, questioning why the situation had to end in violence. The family plans to hold a vigil at the crash site on Friday afternoon to honor her memory.
