Fatal Santa Maria custody death of Antonio Alvarado Orozco – Obituary

Antonio Alvarado Orozco, a 40-year-old man from Santa Maria, died in a hospital after suffering a seizure while in custody, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on September 17, and Orozco’s cause of death was determined to be complications from blunt force trauma to the head, which resulted from a fall during the seizure. The fall occurred from standing height, and his death was classified as accidental.

 

Investigations into the incident included an autopsy, witness interviews, and a review of Orozco’s medical history. Jail surveillance footage captured the seizure and subsequent fall from two different camera angles. Orozco regained consciousness after emergency surgery and began rehabilitation but later experienced a decline in his condition, leading to his death.

 

Authorities are working with multiple agencies, including the Board of State and Community Corrections, the Department of Justice, and the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury, to investigate and share details surrounding Orozco’s death.
