Fatal Weslaco shooting death of Ubaldo Garcia – Obituary
Ubaldo Garcia, a 31-year-old, has been identified as the driver involved in an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a failed traffic stop in Weslaco. The incident began when deputies attempted to pull over Garcia in Edinburg. He fled, ultimately crashing his vehicle in a rural area of Weslaco.
Upon approaching the wrecked vehicle, deputies reported hearing multiple sounds resembling gunfire. This prompted one deputy to discharge his weapon, resulting in a male passenger being struck in the leg.
Following the crash, Garcia was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the incident. After his discharge, he was taken into custody and booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on charges including aggravated assault of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, evading arrest, and resisting arrest.
In connection with a narcotics investigation, authorities executed a search warrant at a location on Owassa Road in Edinburg, where they discovered synthetic marijuana intended for distribution along with cash. Felipe Rojas, aged 30, was arrested at the scene and charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
Garcia has since been arraigned with a bond set at $100,000 and remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail. Rojas was also arraigned with a bond of $40,000. The unidentified passenger who was shot in the leg is still hospitalized. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the matter.
