A tragic incident occurred in Beech Island, South Carolina, where a couple lost their lives due to a falling tree during Hurricane Helene. Jerry Savage, aged 78, and his 74-year-old wife, Marcia, were discovered embracing each other in their bed following a loud crash in their home.
Their grandson, John Savage, 22, had previously checked on them after hearing branches snapping nearby while he was staying with family members. “We heard one snap, and I remember going back there and checking on them,” he recounted, noting that both grandparents and their dog were unharmed at that moment.
Shortly after his visit, however, a deafening “boom” echoed as a large tree collapsed onto the couple’s bedroom, resulting in their deaths. John described the scene, saying, “All you could see was ceiling and tree,” expressing the panic he felt in that moment.
After emergency responders extracted Jerry and Marcia from the wreckage, John learned that his grandfather had heard the tree crack just before it fell, instinctively rolling over to shield his wife.
The family finds solace in believing it was “God’s plan” for Jerry and Marcia to depart this life together, sparing one from enduring life without the other.
Having been married for over five decades, Jerry worked as an electrician and carpenter, while Marcia was a retired bank teller who actively participated in church activities. Their daughter, Tammy Estep, shared that her parents’ love was “immediate and everlasting.”
A GoFundMe page established for the couple notes that they are survived by their son Mark Savage, daughter Tammy Estep and her husband Darrell, as well as four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
As of October 2, reports indicate that Hurricane Helene has claimed the lives of at least 180 individuals in the southeastern United States.
