An investigation is ongoing following a sequence of violent incidents in Worcester, Massachusetts, that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Authorities allege that a man fatally shot another inside a residence before brandishing a firearm at motorists on a bustling highway.
The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Yuvar Perez, while the alleged shooter is 41-year-old Felix Rivera.
“We’re a little shaken. Stray bullets don’t discriminate,” remarked neighbor Amanda Mehl, expressing the community’s concern.
Tension still lingers in the Worcester neighborhood where the violent spree began, with police tape remaining on the porch of the home where Perez was shot on Wednesday, even though the scene has since been cleared.
Residents returned to their homes on Thursday but chose not to engage with the media. Neighbors have been unable to shake the feeling of how close the violence came to their lives. “So, to have them that close really opens your eyes to what could be brought into your neighborhood without you even knowing,” Mehl added.
The initial shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday at a home on Heroult Road, where officers discovered Perez, who later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
Shortly after this incident, a state trooper encountered a man acting suspiciously, later identified as Rivera, who reportedly drew a gun and fired before fleeing the scene, according to Massachusetts State Police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during this encounter.
About an hour later, Rivera allegedly attempted to carjack individuals on Interstate 190 while armed. A pursuit ensued involving Worcester and state police, culminating in Rivera reportedly shooting himself during the confrontation.
