A tragic rollover crash on Highway 169 has resulted in the death of Robert Pitts, a 50-year-old man from Tulsa. The incident occurred on Thursday when a tire blew out on Pitts’ truck, causing it to swerve and ultimately crash around 3 p.m. between East Pine and 36th Street North.
Authorities reported that after the tire failure, the truck overturned and subsequently caught fire due to a ruptured fuel tank, trapping Pitts inside the vehicle. Despite the emergency response team’s efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash scattered debris across all lanes of the highway, leading to significant traffic delays for over six hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage. Thankfully, other drivers on the road were able to avoid further accidents thanks to their awareness of the situation. Police Captain Richard Meulenberg noted that the driver seemed to have attempted to regain control of the vehicle to avoid impacting other motorists.
