In a tragic turn of events on September 25, 2024, Carla Mahan, a mother of three, was intentionally struck and killed in Camden, New Jersey, by a driver identified as Ajee Williams. The incident occurred around 3:20 PM near the intersection of South 7th and Tulip streets.
Emergency responders were dispatched following a 911 call reporting a woman had been hit by a gray Dodge SUV. Upon their arrival, they found Mahan lying in a grassy area, with the vehicle responsible for the collision having already fled the scene.
Mahan was transported to Cooper Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 4 PM. Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage that showed her walking near the intersection shortly before the incident. The footage captured Mahan approaching the passenger side of a gray Dodge Durango, which Williams was driving. Police stated that the video evidence confirmed Williams intentionally drove into Mahan before escaping the scene.
Authorities discovered additional video that showed Williams picking up two children from school just moments prior to the fatal incident, leading investigators to believe the children were present in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
A few days later, on September 28, Williams turned herself in to Camden County police. She now faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the incident.
Family members remember Carla Mahan as an outgoing individual and a loving mother to her three children. Her father, Carlos Mahan, expressed his grief, questioning why the situation escalated to such a tragic end.
In remembrance of Carla, her family plans to hold a vigil at the site of the crash on Friday afternoon.
