A tragic incident on Sunday night has claimed the life of a motorcyclist, marking Hawaii Island’s 23rd traffic-related fatality of the year. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Isaac Dakujaku from Hilo.
According to police reports, the crash occurred around 9:35 p.m. at the intersection of Ainaola Drive and Komohana Street, involving a 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle and a 2015 Nissan sedan. The investigation revealed that the two vehicles collided when the Nissan was making a left turn onto Komohana Street.
Dakujaku was found unresponsive at the scene and was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. The Nissan driver, a 37-year-old man from Hilo, along with a juvenile passenger in the back seat, was unharmed. However, a 23-year-old woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the hospital before being released.
Authorities believe that speed may have contributed to the crash, although Dakujaku was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. In comparison, there were only 14 traffic fatalities reported on Hawaii Island by this same time last year.
