Sixty-year-old Brian T. Coughlin of Cazenovia has been identified as the pilot who tragically died in a fiery crash during an aircraft exhibition in Red Hook, Dutchess County. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, when Coughlin’s World War I-era Fokker D.VII plane caught fire due to unknown mechanical issues, causing it to crash near the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome.
Coughlin, a well-known pilot and long-time board member of the Aerodrome, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the crash, which remains ongoing.
The scheduled airshow for Sunday, Oct. 6, was canceled following the tragedy. Local responders, including New York State Police, Red Hook Fire Department, and Northern Dutchess Paramedics, assisted at the scene.
