A 16-year-old girl from Richmond, Stephanie Anahi, has been identified as the victim of a tragic car accident that occurred on Monday. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s coroner’s division confirmed her identity on Thursday, correcting earlier reports that stated she was only 14 years old.
At the time of the accident, Stephanie was with her 11-year-old sister and two other minors in the vehicle. Her sister was hospitalized and remains in critical condition as of Wednesday.
The incident took place around 5:17 a.m. near Canal Boulevard, where the stolen Infinity G35 coupe was reportedly speeding before veering off the road and colliding with two trees and a utility pole.
Following the crash, two 15-year-old boys who were passengers in the car fled the scene. One was located later at a nearby hospital, while the other was found at his home in Richmond that evening. Both boys acknowledged being in the vehicle but denied driving or stealing it, according to law enforcement officials.
Richmond Police Department stated that the occupants have given conflicting accounts regarding the driver at the time of the accident. Investigators are looking into further evidence, including DNA, to identify who was behind the wheel.
As of Thursday, no arrests have been made in connection with the crash. Should any of the surviving occupants be confirmed as the driver, they could potentially face charges of vehicular manslaughter.
