Fatal Cumberland hit-and-run death of 14-year-old Wilberto Rivera – Obituary.
Wilberto Rivera, a 14-year-old boy, tragically lost his life following a hit-and-run incident in Cumberland on October 10. In connection with this incident, Joshua Raine, an Indianapolis resident, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or catastrophic injury, a Level 4 felony, according to court documents filed on Thursday in Marion County.
Rivera was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike in the 1100 block of Cumberland Road around 10 p.m. on that fateful night. Despite being taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Witnesses, including two friends walking nearby, reported seeing a black Chrysler driving south strike Rivera from behind.
Investigators found several items at the scene, including a chrome-colored plastic piece and a vanity license plate from the vehicle. The area where the accident occurred was noted to lack streetlights and sidewalks, with a speed limit of 40 miles per hour.
Utilizing automatic license plate readers, officers located a 2019 Chrysler 300 linked to Raine around the time of the crash. The following day, Raine reported the accident to the Cumberland Police and met with officers, stating he was en route to work when the incident occurred. The investigation is ongoing as the community mourns the loss of young Rivera.
