Prosecutors revealed that Vernard Floranda, 46, was struck and killed by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting near his home in Washington Heights. The tragic incident occurred around 12:05 a.m. on October 2 at the intersection of W. 160th St. and Amsterdam Ave., where a 26-year-old man was also injured.
Floranda’s mother, Violet Floranda, 73, expressed her heartbreak after receiving the devastating news. “I was crying and screaming for four days. I was screaming mad ’cause it’s not real for me… He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she shared from her home in San Diego.
A sommelier at the renowned Cafe Boulud, owned by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, Floranda had moved to New York two years ago following a career that took him to Las Vegas and Honolulu.
Law enforcement arrested three suspects on Wednesday: a 17-year-old whose identity remains confidential due to his age, along with 18-year-old Jason Texeira and 19-year-old Jeremiah Bascombe. All three face charges including murder, assault, and gun possession.
In Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday, Bascombe, identified as the alleged driver, appeared wearing a hoodie from Essentials Fear of God. He was ordered held without bail as Assistant District Attorney Megan Joy described the evidence against them as “strong.” Prosecutors stated that the shooter fired into a crowd, striking Floranda, who was merely waiting to cross the street to go home. Another innocent bystander was also hit in the ankle.
