Fatal San Gabriel Mountains stabbing death of Paul Lowe – Obituary

A seasoned photojournalist renowned for documenting significant historical moments, including the Yugoslav Wars, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Nelson Mandela’s release, was tragically fatally stabbed while hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains over the weekend. Paul Lowe, aged 60, a British photographer, war correspondent, and educator at the University of the Arts London, sustained severe injuries to his upper torso and was pronounced dead on Saturday along a road near Stoddard Canyon Falls, according to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.

The county’s medical examiner confirmed that Lowe succumbed to a stab wound to the neck.

Following the incident, a man identified as Lowe’s son was observed fleeing the scene and later crashed his vehicle a few miles away. The sheriff’s office reported that, based on evidence collected at both locations and statements from the son and witnesses, the son was taken into custody.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has charged Emir Abadzic Lowe, the son, with one count of murder. Authorities stated that first responders were alerted to the scene by a bystander. The son is set to appear in court for arraignment on Wednesday, though it remains unclear if he has legal representation.

Paul Lowe was a distinguished professor specializing in conflict, peace, and imagery at the University of the Arts’ London College of Communication, where he was regarded as a highly respected member of the faculty for over twenty years. The university acknowledged his profound influence, stating, “Paul’s work across his career made a ground-breaking impact in the representation of war and conflict and latterly in the complex cultural negotiations involved in peace and reconciliation work.” His legacy includes being an award-winning photographer, author, critic, and an exceptionally empathetic educator.

Lowe authored the book “Bosnians,” which chronicles a decade of conflict and its aftermath in Bosnia, published in 2005. His other notable works include “Photography Masterclass,” “Understanding Photojournalism,” “Reporting the Siege of Sarajevo,” and “Photography, Bearing Witness and the Yugoslav Wars, 1988-2021.”
