The Iowa State Patrol has confirmed that 17-year-old Rowan Ross of Washington, Iowa, was killed in a tragic accident involving a train in Ainsworth on Monday.
Ross, who was a senior at Washington High School, passed away in the early hours of the morning. In an email to parents, the school expressed their deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the death of Rowan Ross, a valued member of our senior class.” The message further explained that notification was delayed due to the wishes of Ross’s family, allowing them time to inform relatives during this challenging time.
The accident occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. when Ross was driving a 2011 Ford Fusion south on Spruce Street. According to the crash report, the car failed to stop at a railroad crossing and was struck by a westbound train. The vehicle ended up in a nearby ditch.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
