Fatal Las Cruces plane crash death of Charles Thomas “Chuck” Coleman – Obituary.
The pilot involved in a tragic plane crash during the 2nd annual Las Cruces Air and Space Expo has been identified by the mayor of Las Cruces. Mayor Erick Enriquez announced during a city council meeting that Charles Thomas “Chuck” Coleman lost his life in the incident that occurred Sunday afternoon.
Originally from California, Coleman was highly regarded as an engineer, aerobatic pilot, and test pilot, boasting over 10,000 hours of flight experience. He participated in numerous airshows and had offered more than 3,000 rides in aerobatic planes.
Mayor Enriquez expressed his condolences, stating, “Unfortunately, we had a tragic ending to our Air and Space Expo this weekend. There was an aircraft accident during Sunday’s performance that resulted in the death of pilot, Charles T. “Chuck” Coleman. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones and fans of Chuck Coleman.”
In addition to his extensive flying experience, Coleman served as an aerobatic flight instructor for the actors in the 2022 film “Top Gun: Maverick,” where he completed over 100 flights to prepare them for flying in Navy F-18 Hornets.
The crash, which involved a single aircraft, occurred at the Las Cruces International Airport at approximately 2:30 p.m. Coleman was the only individual who lost his life during the event.
