Kentucky State Senator Johnnie Turner passed away on Tuesday due to injuries sustained from an accident where he was thrown into an empty swimming pool while operating his lawnmower, just over a month ago.
Turner, who was 76, had a background in military service as a medic with the U.S. Army and practiced law in Cumberland, Kentucky before entering politics. Serving in the State Senate since 2021, he had also represented his community in the Kentucky House from 1999 to 2002.
Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers expressed heartfelt condolences, recalling his long-standing friendship with Turner. “This loss is deeply personal to me… My heart breaks for his wife, Maritza, and his children,” Stivers shared in a statement. He emphasized the immense respect and affection many felt for Turner, noting the profound impact on his family.
Turner, a well-known figure in Harlan, Kentucky, was a vocal advocate for economic initiatives supporting coal mining and horse racing to revitalize the region. His dedication to the area was exemplified during a recent disaster, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remembered. “Johnnie was on the scene, ankle-deep in mud, with his own equipment, helping the people of Letcher County,” McConnell noted, highlighting Turner’s unwavering commitment to his community.
As he prepared for re-election, Turner’s name remains on the ballot following his successful primary campaign, as confirmed by Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams. Adams commemorated Turner on social media, remembering him for his courteous nature and dedication to public service.
