Fatal Lincoln City vehicle collision death of Danielle Wolff – Obituary

On Tuesday, October 22, at approximately 1:55 p.m., a tragic accident unfolded in Lincoln City when a police officer discovered a woman lying in the street next to an electric bicycle at the intersection of Southwest Ninth Street and U.S. Highway 101. The officer initiated assistance as 911 calls about the incident flooded in. Despite the swift response of North Lincoln Fire & Rescue and Pacific West Ambulance personnel, 47-year-old Danielle Wolff, a resident of Lincoln City, unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Wolff was riding her electric bike southbound on the sidewalk along the east side of the highway. She suddenly braked as she approached a stopped vehicle at the intersection of Southeast Ninth Street, resulting in her falling onto the roadway. The driver of the stopped vehicle, unaware of Wolff on the pavement, executed a right turn and struck her, then immediately pulled over to call 911 for help. The driver has been fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation.

Traffic was reduced to two lanes for about four hours while the Lincoln County Multi-Agency Crash Team conducted their investigation, which includes representatives from various law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. No charges have been filed at this time.

Regrettably, Wolff was not wearing a helmet during the incident. This unfortunate event highlights the importance of wearing protective gear while cycling. Oregon’s cycling laws emphasize safe road sharing, requiring cyclists to utilize bicycle lanes when available, and specifically prohibiting electric bicycles from using sidewalks. In instances where cyclists share sidewalks with pedestrians, they are only permitted to do so at a speed no greater than a regular walking pace when nearing crosswalks. Although Oregon laws do not mandate helmet use for riders aged 16 and older, wearing a DOT-approved helmet is strongly encouraged for all cyclists.
