According to the Monterey Sheriff’s Office, Marshall died at the hospital after officers opened fire following unsuccessful de-escalation attempts. His mother and a neighbor alerted the police, with reports indicating that he had expressed a desire to die in an officer-involved shooting.
Witnesses, including the Executive Director of the Golden Bough Playhouse, described seeing Marshall in a barricaded area before police arrived and attempted to subdue him with bean bag rounds.
