Authorities have confirmed that Shulai Wang, a 70-year-old woman from China, is the victim in a homicide case following the discovery of her body in a bag at Gulf Harbour, Auckland, seven months ago. Wang, who arrived in New Zealand in August 2023, had no family in the country and had not been reported missing prior to the incident.
Wang’s body was found in the water on March 12, prompting an extensive investigation by the police. As a result of this investigation, a 37-year-old man and woman were charged with interfering with human remains after they were arrested in early July while attempting to leave New Zealand. Neither has been charged with causing her death.
Acting Detective Inspector Tim Williams stated that police conducted thorough inquiries, including travel to China to assist in identifying Wang. He confirmed that her family in China has been notified, and efforts are being made to repatriate her remains.
Investigators used various methods, including DNA testing and expertise from forensic specialists, to determine Wang’s identity. Initial findings indicated she was of Chinese descent and likely in her 30s to 50s at the time of her death. The investigation continues as police work diligently to uncover further details surrounding the circumstances of her death.
