A tragic incident in Des Moines has claimed the life of 42-year-old Justin Lee Romaine, one of three pedestrians struck in a hit-and-run earlier this month. Romaine succumbed to his injuries on Friday night after being hospitalized since the crash that occurred on October 9.
The collision took place on the city’s south side, resulting in Romaine being left in critical condition. This incident marks the 14th traffic fatality in Des Moines for 2024.
Among the other victims, a 45-year-old man remains in serious condition, while a 25-year-old man suffered only a minor foot injury and declined further medical treatment.
Authorities continue to search for the driver of the minivan involved in the accident, identified as 32-year-old Renato Virves. He has not yet been located. Police have described Virves as having a distinct right eye, standing between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-5, and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds. He is also known to wear a silver grill on his teeth.
