An inquest has revealed that a woman found dead in west Oxfordshire while attending a funeral died by suicide. Barbara Rooney, 33, had traveled from her home in Plymouth to Witney for the funeral of a relative when she was reported missing and subsequently discovered near the River Windrush.
During the inquest held at Oxford Coroner’s Court on October 21, testimonies from law enforcement, family, and friends were presented. Mrs. Rooney arrived in the area on May 22 with her parents and was staying with a family friend. Bridget Murphy, who hosted Mrs. Rooney during her visit, described her as part of a close-knit family, noting that others referred to Barbara as a lively and cheerful individual.
The family was in Witney to attend the funeral of Mrs. Rooney’s husband’s cousin, who had tragically taken his own life just weeks prior. Following the service, she went missing, prompting her sister to file a report with the police.
Her body was found on May 24 by a volunteer search group. Authorities used photographic evidence to confirm her identity. The inquest highlighted Mrs. Rooney’s long-standing struggles with mental health issues, dating back to her teenage years. She had been receiving support from the NHS service ‘Live Well’.
A post-mortem examination indicated no presence of drugs or alcohol and ruled out any foul play. The coroner, Mr. Nicholas Graham, ultimately concluded that Mrs. Rooney died by hanging.
