Fatal Adams County shooting death of James Keating – Obituary.
On Friday, October 25, 2024, at around 7:20 p.m., the Adams County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 alert regarding a shooting at the Shell Station located at 787 Highway 61 North in Washington. A deputy nearby was flagged down by a motorist who reported that shots were being fired at the gas station.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement detained one individual found by the gas pumps and seized a semi-automatic weapon. Inside the store, deputies discovered Keating, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and was lying on the floor.
Sheriff Patten described the incident as a senseless act of violence that would profoundly impact the lives of two families. According to reports, the altercation began when the shooter had set a cup of ice down while inside the store. After Keating entered and accidentally knocked the cup over while grabbing some drinks, an argument ignited. Although the shooter suggested he had a weapon, he did not brandish it. Keating then exited the store to retrieve a handgun from his vehicle and confronted the shooter upon his return. The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the shooter fired multiple rounds at Keating.
Sheriff Patten noted that investigators have gathered substantial evidence, including video footage, audio recordings, and witness statements. All individuals present during the incident, including the shooter, have been cooperative with law enforcement. The sheriff has consulted with the District Attorney’s Office, requesting that the next Grand Jury examine the case to determine the appropriate charges or assess if the shooting was justifiable.
