Fatal Birmingham shooting death of Melvin Anthony Burkes – Obituary

The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide following a shooting on Pearson Avenue SW. The incident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday when officers responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found one adult male with non-life-threatening injuries, and shortly after, a second victim was discovered with critical injuries.

 

Community members and police provided life-saving assistance to the second victim, who was later identified as 38-year-old Melvin Anthony Burkes. He was transported to UAB Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

 

Initial investigations indicated that Burkes was involved in a verbal dispute with a third man when shots were fired, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. A person of interest was located at the location and taken into custody for questioning.
