Fatal Monkey Junction Walmart shooting death of Mark Thomas Paz – Obituary
A tragic incident occurred at a Walmart in Monkey Junction, North Carolina, where employee Mark Thomas Paz was fatally shot during an attempt to prevent a shoplifting incident on Saturday evening. Dean Michael Newman, 35, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Paz’s death, as reported by District Attorney Rebecca Zimmer Donaldson.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office stated that the shooting happened around 6 p.m. when several employees confronted a suspect trying to steal items from the store located at 5135 Carolina Beach Road. A struggle ensued, and during the confrontation, Newman allegedly pulled out a gun and fired a shot, striking Paz.
Newman fled the scene but was apprehended by a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot shortly thereafter. He is currently being held without bond at the New Hanover County jail and is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday, according to Lt. Jerry Brewer of the sheriff’s office.
Newman’s criminal history is extensive, with prior offenses in New Hanover and Brunswick counties that led to his designation as a habitual felon. He had recently been released from state prison in Greene County in August after serving over eight years for previous convictions.
On Sunday, a security guard was present at the Walmart, informing customers that the store was closed while the sheriff’s office conducted its investigation. An employee indicated that the store might reopen on Monday.
