Fatal Iowa City collision death of Ashlee Hopkins – Obituary
Ashlee Hopkins, 41, tragically passed away after being struck by a vehicle while cycling during the Iowa City-area Farm Cycle event. The incident occurred on Rohret Road, where a 77-year-old woman, Ok Soon Lee, allegedly drove her Toyota Sienna into the oncoming lane and struck Hopkins. Lee has been charged with failure to maintain control, driving on the wrong side of the road, and speeding.
Hopkins was critically injured in the crash and died eight days later after donating her liver to save another life. She was remembered as an “uplifting light” by her friends and family. Investigators found no evidence of intoxication or phone use by Lee, and determined that her actions did not reflect a willful disregard for safety. Despite the tragic outcome, no higher charges have been filed, and Lee’s court appearance is scheduled for December 6, 2024.
Hopkins, who worked as the development director for Bur Oak Land Trust and previously contributed to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, was well-known for her positive influence on those around her. She made a lasting impact in the community, especially through her dedication to environmental preservation and social services. Her passing has left a profound void in the Iowa City community.
