Fatal Merced County I-5 crash deaths of Juan Jose Cosio Gomez and Kristopher Rose – Obituary
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified the two victims of a deadly head-on collision on Interstate 5 that took place on October 30, 2024. Juan Jose Cosio Gomez, 58, of San Jose, and Kristopher Rose, 18, of Pleasant Hill, were both killed in the crash, according to Deputy Michael Domingue. The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 12:51 a.m. when a 2008 Honda Accord traveling northbound crossed the median and collided head-on with a 2017 Isuzu box truck in the southbound lanes of I-5, north of Volta Road. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, blocking the southbound lanes for over an hour. Firefighters extinguished the flames, but both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated that both were wearing seat belts, and the investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
