Derek Sink, 39, was discovered dead inside a tanning bed at a Planet Fitness in Indianapolis, three days after his family last heard from him. The Indianapolis Star reported that Sink’s last communication with relatives was on Friday. On Monday morning, police were called to the Hardegan Street Planet Fitness following a report of a body inside one of the tanning beds.
A gym member, Elizabeth Len, noticed a “foul smell” that became stronger near the tanning rooms, raising her suspicions. She expressed concern over the tanning bed being closed for days, saying, “The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?”
The Marion County Coroner’s Office later identified the deceased as Sink. His cause of death is still under investigation, but his family noted that he had a history of substance abuse. Drug paraphernalia was reportedly found near his body in the tanning room.
Court records indicate that Sink, who was wearing a GPS ankle monitor, had past legal issues, including charges for drug possession in 2023. He had pleaded guilty to one charge and was sentenced to home detention, where he was required to undergo routine drug tests.
