Fatal Lake Hartwell drowning death of David A. Johnson – Obituary
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis confirmed the identity of a 73-year-old man who drowned in his vehicle at Lake Hartwell. Authorities received a 911 call at 1:37 p.m. on Tuesday from a fisherman who reported spotting a submerged vehicle near a private boat ramp off Tugaloo Shores Drive, near Fair Play. The vehicle was identified as a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck, which was recovered from the lake around 3 p.m. from a depth of approximately 8 feet.
Inside the vehicle, the body of David A. Johnson was found. Johnson, a resident of a nearby home, had been reported missing earlier that day. It is believed that he died sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The cause of death has been confirmed as drowning. Investigators are continuing to gather more details about the incident.
