A shooting in Homestead, Florida, claimed the life of 23-year-old Brendan Roger Francois and injured a 16-year-old girl on Monday night. Police have arrested 27-year-old Louis Edward Harris Jr. in connection with the incident.
Authorities reported that the Homestead Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 600 block of Southwest Eighth Street shortly before 9 p.m. When officers arrived, they found Francois dead from a gunshot wound and the teenage girl with a graze injury to her wrist.
According to an eyewitness, Francois and the girl were walking west on West Lucy Street when Harris began following them. Harris allegedly confronted the victims, shouting, “That’s my girl,” before shooting Francois. The teenager, along with surveillance footage from nearby locations, helped investigators identify Harris as the shooter.
Harris was arrested on Wednesday and taken to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau, where he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the shooting. After being informed of his charges, Harris reportedly displayed erratic behavior, causing damage to the interview room and acting aggressively toward investigators.
Francois’ mother, Yvelouse Chery, expressed her sorrow, stating that her son deserved better. She said Francois was on his way to visit a girl he had recently met on the day of the shooting.
Harris is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting his bond hearing. He faces charges of second-degree murder with a weapon and criminal mischief.
