Fatal Akron, Ohio shooting death of Darnell E. McGrady – Obituary

Darnell E. McGrady, 32, was fatally shot early Thursday morning, November 21, at a residence on East Wilbeth Road in Akron’s Firestone Park neighborhood. Police arrived at the scene shortly after midnight and found McGrady suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 a.m.

 

Following an investigation, authorities arrested 28-year-old Byron Johnson in connection with the shooting. Police discovered that Johnson had been at the home with McGrady and another male when an altercation led to McGrady being shot. Johnson and the other male fled the scene in McGrady’s vehicle, which was later traced to a residence on Silvercrest Avenue.

 

At Silvercrest, Johnson reportedly forced his way into a home and assaulted a 65-year-old woman, punching her multiple times before stealing money. The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson then barricaded himself inside another home on Storer Avenue. After a standoff, SWAT officers apprehended him without incident.

 

Johnson was charged with murder, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and motor vehicle theft, and was booked into the Summit County Jail.
