Seuk Kim, a 49-year-old pilot from Springfield, Virginia, tragically died on Sunday, November 24, when the plane he was piloting crashed in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Kim was flying a Cessna T210L plane from Maryland to Albany, carrying three rescue dogs as part of an animal transport mission with a nonprofit organization.
The crash occurred in the remote town of Windham, about 35 miles southwest of Albany, where responders found Kim deceased at the scene, along with one of the dogs. Two other dogs survived: a Labrador-mix puppy named Whiskey, who suffered broken legs, and Pluto, a Yorkie mix, who had only minor injuries. Whiskey was taken to a veterinary hospital in Connecticut for treatment.
Kim’s family described him as a selfless and kind individual who worked tirelessly to help others, including through his work with animal rescue organizations. His efforts over the years saved countless animals from being euthanized, earning tributes from those in the rescue community. Maggie Pryor, director of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie County, expressed gratitude for Kim’s dedication in coordinating flights for animals in need.
Kim, originally from South Korea, immigrated to the U.S. and built a life marked by generosity and compassion. His legacy will endure in the many lives he positively impacted. Authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred in poor visibility conditions.
