Charlyze Hayter dies in fatal Rye shooting

Charlyze Hayter dies in fatal Rye shooting

Fatal Rye shooting death of Charlyze Hayter – Obituary.

Charlyze Hayter, a 19-year-old woman, was killed alongside 29-year-old Jackson Gilmour in a violent incident at his home in Rye, located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The tragic event occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to police, Gilmour was asleep when Hayter and an unidentified man armed with a rifle allegedly broke into the house shortly after 4 a.m. During a struggle, both Gilmour and Hayter were shot dead, while the second man fled the scene and remains at large.

Hayter’s grandfather, Bob, expressed the deep pain her death caused the family, particularly her father, who is devastated by the loss. He described Hayter as a bright young woman with great potential but who had unfortunately become involved with the wrong crowd. The family had hoped for a better future for her, but this tragic incident has left them heartbroken.

A close friend of Gilmour, a carpenter and plumber from the area, shared his shock over the death, revealing that Gilmour had recently distanced himself from old friends, fearing he had been associating with a dangerous group. The friend also mentioned that Gilmour’s housemate, who survived the attack, was able to hide and call the police after hearing the break-in.

In a disturbing sequence, Hayter reportedly attacked Gilmour with a baton and demanded his personal belongings. During the altercation, Gilmour shot Hayter before being shot by the male intruder. Paramedics arrived but could not save either of the victims. Police believe the suspects were known to Gilmour and consider the incident a targeted attack.

As investigators search for the second man involved, police continue to gather evidence from the crime scene, which included eerie images of a rabbit and a skull found in the garage. Gilmour had been living in the property for almost a year, and neighbors reported frequent comings and goings from the house. Authorities have not yet determined the motive for the break-in, but drugs may be a factor in their ongoing investigation.

Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson confirmed that the second suspect could still be armed and urged anyone with information or footage to come forward. Gilmour had been known to police, though details of his prior interactions with law enforcement are not yet clear.
