Fatal California rabies death of Leah Seneng – Obituary

Leah Seneng, 60, tragically passed away in late November after contracting rabies from a bat bite in her classroom in Dos Palos, California. In mid-October, Seneng attempted to help a bat that had found its way into her classroom, but the bat bit her as it startled and flew away.

Despite showing no symptoms immediately, Seneng fell ill about a month later, and after being placed in a coma, she passed away on November 22. Her death marks the first rabies fatality in Fresno County since 1992.

Seneng, a beloved art teacher at Bryant Middle School, was remembered for her kind nature and passion for life, particularly her love for the arts and her adventurous spirit. The Merced County and Fresno County health departments are investigating the incident, urging the public to be cautious of wild animal encounters.
