What was initially believed to be an unattended death has now turned into a homicide investigation after a bullet was discovered lodged in Michael Smith’s body. The 54-year-old man was found deceased on Thanksgiving night in the front yard of a property on E. County Oaks Road in southern Logan County.
Smith had been staying at the property in a tent for several days. Authorities were called to the scene after the property owner discovered Smith’s body, but no immediate signs of foul play were found. However, further investigation revealed a small caliber bullet in Smith’s body, leading to the reopening of the case as a homicide.
Three individuals were reportedly at the scene, and witnesses heard gunshots followed by the departure of two vehicles.
Aldon Owen Harmon was arrested in connection with the incident, although he denied involvement and suggested other individuals were responsible. Investigators believe the fatal confrontation may have stemmed from a dispute over a stolen bicycle. The investigation remains ongoing.
