A tragic incident occurred on the evening of December 5, 2024, when a 58-year-old woman, Nancy Szal, was struck by a Tesla while attempting to cross Governor Printz Boulevard near Downing Drive in Wilmington. The crash took place around 5:31 p.m. when Szal, walking north, entered the path of a westbound 2021 Tesla Model 3. The area where she crossed was unmarked and lacked street lighting, making the situation hazardous.

Szal was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead from her injuries. The driver of the Tesla, a 31-year-old man from Claymont, was unharmed in the crash. Authorities closed the road for about three hours while they investigated and cleared the scene.
