A tragic hit-and-run incident on Monday morning in Wellington claimed the life of 62-year-old educator Toshimi Janiga. The crash occurred just before 5:45 a.m. as Janiga, a longtime teacher, was walking south across the intersection of Aero Club Drive and South Club Drive. She was struck by a vehicle that did not stop and continued driving north on Aero Club.
The vehicle, a 2019 Ford F450 pickup, was later located for investigative purposes. Authorities identified the driver as a 43-year-old man from Stephens City, Virginia. The driver has not been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.
Janiga, a beloved figure in the local education community, was recognized as Palm Beach County’s Teacher of the Year in 2021. She had dedicated over a decade to teaching at the Riviera Beach Prep Academy, where she taught English and Holocaust studies. She was also known for her work with the Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University.
