Fatal Las Cruces motel crash death of Kari J. Scholin – Obituary
Kari J. Scholin, a 55-year-old woman from Las Cruces, tragically lost her life on Friday when a vehicle backed into her motel room at the Imperial Sky Motel on W. Picacho Avenue. The incident also left a 59-year-old man in the room with minor injuries.
According to Las Cruces authorities, the driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, 22-year-old Alan Leyva-Vasquez, reversed the vehicle into the motel, crashing through the wall. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on December 6th. Scholin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Leyva-Vasquez was arrested on the same day and is now facing a felony charge of vehicular homicide. He is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
The crash has raised concerns within the community about vehicle safety and protection for bystanders. Investigators are continuing to gather details about the events leading up to the fatal accident.
