Jerome Rambo Jr. dies in fatal Newton County, Texas shooting
Fatal Newton County, Texas shooting death of Jerome Rambo Jr. – Obituary
The family of 16-year-old Jerome Rambo Jr., who was fatally shot at Elam Event Center in November, is speaking out following the arrest of a suspect connected to the case. Jerome’s aunt, Jania Rambo, expressed the deep pain his loss has caused, recalling his presence just last year as he helped set up a Christmas tree.
The family believes Jerome was unintentionally caught in an ongoing conflict tied to a prior feud, potentially stemming from an incident at a Jasper prom in April 2023. According to Jania, Jerome shifted between friend groups in Jasper and Newton, inadvertently becoming involved in the dispute.
Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby confirmed an arrest but has withheld the suspect’s name pending official arraignment. The charges include felony tampering with evidence and a misdemeanor charge of deadly conduct. However, Jania Rambo suspects the arrested individual, reportedly a friend of Jerome, is not the primary shooter.
She shared that the suspect claimed not to be the main perpetrator, a statement supported by accounts from witnesses who were present at the scene.
Sheriff Burby highlighted the community’s responsibility in preventing such violence, urging residents to take a stand against allowing these crimes to persist.
The suspect is awaiting extradition to Texas on outstanding warrants, and the investigation is still underway. As the family continues to seek justice, Jania emphasized how deeply Jerome’s absence is felt every day.
