Fatal Phelan aqueduct recovery of Jose Cardona Jr. – Obituary
The body of 19-year-old Jose Cardona Jr., a Victorville resident, was recovered from the California Aqueduct in Phelan earlier this week. Loved ones confirmed his identity after his remains were found on Tuesday morning near Caughlin Street.
Cardona was reported missing on November 25, 2024, after leaving his family’s home for a walk and failing to return. His father ultimately discovered his remains, according to a statement shared through an online fundraiser established to assist the family.
The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of death, while the California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. No additional details were provided as of Wednesday.
Cardona, a cancer survivor, had recently been struggling with mental health issues linked to the side effects of chemotherapy. According to the family, he had stopped taking his psychiatric medication days before his disappearance.
“Cancer is a heavy burden for anyone, especially a teenager,” read the statement. The family described Cardona as not being in a stable mental state at the time of his disappearance.
The Cardona family searched extensively, using drones and other tools, while also receiving help and support from the local community. They expressed gratitude to those who participated in the search efforts and sent prayers during the difficult time.
