John R. Lyons, 24, of Westchester, Illinois, was identified as the suspect in a triple homicide in Mahomet, Illinois, before being fatally shot by police in Berwyn.
The incident occurred late on the night of December 18, 2024, when Berwyn police responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 1800 block. After fleeing on foot, Lyons broke into a residence and killed two dogs. Police later saw him attempting to escape and, when ordered to stop, he fired at officers.
In response, officers returned fire, fatally wounding Lyons. No officers were injured. Lyons had been wanted for the murders of Janis L. Mason, 61, Caleb M. Mason, 23, and Sara E. Mason, 26, who were shot and killed earlier in Mahomet.
