Fatal Lowell shooting death of Nikhl Israni – Obituary

Nikhl Israni, 24, of Lowell, Massachusetts, was killed in a shooting Monday night near the intersection of Middlesex and Maude streets. Police found him with seven gunshot wounds to his face, upper body, and leg shortly before 8 p.m. He was transported to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old Bravindah Mawanda, also of Lowell, in connection with the incident. Investigators believe Mawanda and Israni were inside Israni’s Honda Civic when the shooting occurred. Mawanda allegedly fled to his nearby home after the incident, where police later recovered a firearm consistent with the wounds inflicted on Israni.

Surveillance footage from the area showed a man leaving the scene and entering a residence. During questioning, Mawanda initially claimed self-defense, stating that Israni had pulled a gun on him during a drug transaction. However, he later admitted to fabricating parts of his story, including the presence of a second person in the vehicle.

Mawanda faces charges of murder and multiple firearms violations and is scheduled for arraignment in Lowell District Court.
