A 51-year-old pizza delivery driver, Derek Burpo, was tragically shot and killed while on his evening shift on January 1, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Police received multiple calls about the shooting around 9 p.m. that day. They arrived to find Burpo with a gunshot wound on a private roadway, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Burpo had been on his way to deliver a pizza when the attack occurred. Birmingham officer Truman Fitzgerald expressed his sorrow, calling it one of the most devastating homicides in the city.
He noted that Burpo was simply trying to support his family when he became the victim of an appalling robbery that cost a family their loved one.
The police have not identified any suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
This incident marks the first homicide of the year in Birmingham, following a record-breaking year for the city in 2024, which saw up to 151 homicides.
Experts attribute a significant impact of gun violence on communities, with firearm-related deaths continuing to rise across the United States. In 2022 alone, more than 48,000 people died from firearm injuries.
