Four family members tragically lost their lives in an explosion that occurred at their home on Huxley Road in Ellsworth Township on October 5, 2024. The explosion, which took place around 7:19 a.m., left the two-story structure severely damaged, with only the basement and an attached garage remaining intact.
The victims were identified as Jeffrey Kocanyar, 69; Joann Kocanyar, 67; Julie Lubic, 33; and Adam Lubic, 33. According to the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office, the explosion claimed the lives of three individuals at the scene, while one was transported to a local hospital, where they later died. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation by the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Preliminary findings suggest the explosion and fire caused significant damage, with burning debris found around the site. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support the surviving family members.
