Fatal Sumner County highway accident claims the lives of Ernestina Eumaña Álvarez and Christian Gutiérrez – Obituary
A tragic two-vehicle crash on Interstate-35 in Sumner County, Kansas, resulted in the deaths of 58-year-old Ernestina Eumaña Álvarez and a newborn, Christian Gutiérrez, both from Minneapolis. The collision occurred Thursday when a van pulling a trailer overturned on the highway and was hit by another southbound vehicle.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 10 other individuals were injured in the incident. Seven passengers from the van sustained injuries, including a 55-year-old man from Circle Pines and a 63-year-old man from Minneapolis, who were reportedly outside the vehicle at the time of the crash and suffered severe injuries.
Among those taken to the hospital were a 67-year-old woman, a 47-year-old man from Richfield, and 27-year-old Rosa Gutierrez, the infant’s mother, who remains in critical condition according to family reports. A one-year-old boy from Minneapolis and a 64-year-old woman from Richfield were treated for minor injuries.
The three occupants of the Jeep Grand Cherokee involved in the crash, a 63-year-old Kansas man, a 61-year-old Oklahoma man, and a 23-year-old Kansas woman, sustained minor injuries. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the van’s overturn.
