Austin Stanek dies in fatal McHenry County hit-and-run crash

Fatal McHenry County hit-and-run death of Austin Stanek – Obituary.

A 24-year-old pedestrian, Austin Stanek of Island Lake, tragically lost his life following a hit-and-run incident on September 27, 2024.

The crash occurred at 10:48 p.m. on the 4300 block of Roberts Road near Island Lake. Authorities reported that a vehicle struck Stanek and failed to stop after the collision, leaving him behind.

Despite being rushed to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington, Stanek was pronounced dead from his injuries. McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Island Lake police and Wauconda firefighters, responded to the scene that evening.

After a thorough investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Major Crash Investigation Unit, Christine S. Eilers, a 50-year-old woman from McHenry, was identified as the driver who fled the scene.

The vehicle involved was later located in a garage in Lakemoor. Eilers has since been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and failure to comply with reporting a crash involving death.

Eilers was arrested and taken into custody, with a court appearance scheduled for the same day. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding this fatal crash continue.
