Martavion Howard, a 32-year-old resident of Rockford, was identified as the victim in a hit-and-run incident that occurred Friday night on the Auburn Street Bridge.
According to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, Howard was found lying in the road around 7:45 p.m. after being struck by a vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away shortly after his arrival.
Authorities report that the driver responsible for hitting Howard fled the scene before police arrived. As a result, the Auburn Street Bridge was temporarily closed while officers investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The investigation into the hit-and-run and Howard’s death remains ongoing.
