Fatal Jacksonville hit-and-run death of Lauren Peterson – Obituary
Lauren Peterson, an 8-year-old girl from Lake City, tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run accident on Friday, January 31, 2025, while riding her scooter on U.S. 90 at around 6:45 p.m.
Witnesses reported that the driver, later identified as 38-year-old Julio Marquez, fled the scene after striking the child.
Despite efforts to save her, Lauren was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead from her injuries.
Marquez was later arrested and is being held without bond at the Columbia County jail.
Community members have expressed outrage over the incident, calling for increased traffic enforcement on U.S. 90, which they say has become notorious for speeding and reckless driving.
